The Villa Müller is the most significant work of modern architecture in Prague, a true masterpiece by the Brno-born pioneer of modern architecture and design Adolf Loos. He is one of the greatest architects of the 1st half of the 20th century and is the founder of the Raumplan.

The rooms in the Villa are positioned hierarchically according to their proportions. The main living room forms the central space. There are also a few adjacent rooms, cleverly arranged and all connected by a staircase. On top of the complex building construction featuring multiple height levels, there is a terrace on the flat roof offering beautiful views. Despite all this, the Villa looks quite simple from the outside. The face wall is divided only by the windows, and there’s a balcony facing the street. The Villa is made of steel concrete and lime plaster. In 2000, it has undergone a successful and elaborate restoration process (arch. Václav Girsa and coll.), during which the Villa was restored back to its original 1931 state, including all details and interior furnishings. The restoration further included the Villa’s romantic garden which contrasts with the otherwise austere building. Nowadays, the Villa is managed by the City of Prague Museum and is open to visitors.

Loos designed another similar Villa, just slightly smaller, the Villa Winternitz. He worked on the project together with his colleague Karel Lhota in 1931-32, and it is located in the Na Cihlářce 10 (2092/XVI) Street in Prague’s Smíchov district. You can visit the Villa online in this episode of The Hidden Gems of Architechture – The Villa Winternitz.
