Jestico + Whiles hotel in Zanzibar nearing completion
Construction of the five-star Zuri Zanzibar hotel and resort is nearing completion in Zanzibar, 50 km east of the Tanzanian coast. The Czech office of the Jestico + Whiles studio designed the resort for Czech investor RSJ Private Equity. The hotel has been designed as a light structure floating above the terrain and surrounded by greenery. The “African Chic”-style bungalows feature materials and designs from the local culture and traditions.
The sustainable complex will offer a total of 46 bungalows, six apartments and three villas. The bungalows, stretching across 41 sqm, are being built from unburnt bricks local residents make from a mix of cement and sand. The roofs are covered by a traditional Tanzanian material produced from grass. With respect to the local custom, the bungalows are equipped with outside showers. The resort will also offer three restaurants, four bars, a swimming pool, an outdoor gym, a vast library, a yoga center and wellness zone. The resort has been designed with a focus on sustainability and independence and aspires to be EarthCheck certified. It will be equipped with desalination equipment and a water cleaning plant. Potable water will be distributed in glass flasks to reduce plastic waste. An ecological air-conditioning system will reduce energy consumption by 75 percent.
The Jestico + Whiles studio was established in London in 1977. Its first and only international office opened in Prague in 1992, overseeing activities across the CEE region, including the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Russia, Germany and Croatia.
